Sustainability in Progress

From November 2026 through June 2027, we are working to make the museum more sustainable.

We will remain open as usual during the construction work! We ask for your understanding that certain areas of the museum may temporarily be less accessible, but we very much look forward to your visit.

A historic building requires constant care.

Over the coming months, we will be carrying out major maintenance behind these scaffolds while simultaneously making our museum more sustainable. This approach not only protects this remarkable monument but also ensures a stable and energy-efficient indoor climate. A great benefit for both our centuries-old collection and our visitors. Care and craftsmanship Over the years, the elements have left their mark. Specialists will restore the facades and the paintwork, thoroughly inspect the roof, and bring the monumental window frames back into prime condition. Where necessary, they will restore authentic details using traditional techniques.

Invisibly sustainable

Making a monument more sustainable requires a tailor-made approach: we want to save energy without compromising the building's historical character. That is why we are insulating the roof beneath the existing tiles with a smart foil and sealing off drafts. We are also replacing the window panes with high-quality, insulating heritage glass, while preserving the original frames. You will hardly see the difference—aside from the fact that the building will shine as it once did—but you will certainly feel it in a comfortable building with significantly lower CO2 emissions.

A green example

As a national museum, we are eager to take the lead in demonstrating that centuries-old monuments can also have a sustainable future. The Dutch government shares this green ambition and is financially supporting this project in collaboration with the National Restoration Fund (Nationaal Restauratiefonds).
