Come and spend a day gathering inspiration and working in the museum! Rijksmuseum Meermanno and Céline Hurka invite designers, typographers, and students to the Ornamental Type Research Day. View historical books, attend an inspiring lecture, create new work, and meet fellow designers. The goal? To go home with a sketch for a new alphabet. The day includes a vegetarian lunch, coffee, and tea.
The Ornamental Type Research Day is part of typographer Céline Hurka's residency at Rijksmuseum Meermanno. There are two days featuring different inspiring guest speakers: Benjamin McMillan on 16 September and Hanna Boslau on 1 October.

11:30 – Lecture by Benjamin McMillan
12:15 – Lunch & networking, opportunity to visit Céline Hurka's residency space
12:45 – Rickey Tax (head of collections) showcases special books from the museum
13:15 – Researching the collection, working on your own alphabet & feedback from Céline Hurka and Benjamin McMillan
16:00 – Closing
Benjamin McMillan, a graphic and letterform designer, explores how typefaces are constructed and how letterforms can interact with one another. His design approach stems from building self-imposed rules and limitations which guide his work and influence both the creation and use of lettering in projects. As part of his workshop on layered ornamental typography, Benjamin will speak about this approach and showcase some of its results.
