Come and spend a day gathering inspiration and working in the museum! Rijksmuseum Meermanno and Céline Hurka invite designers, typographers, and students to the Ornamental Type Research Day. View historical books, attend an inspiring lecture, create new work, and meet fellow designers. The goal? To go home with a sketch for a new alphabet. The day includes a vegetarian lunch, coffee, and tea.
The Ornamental Type Research Day is part of typographer Céline Hurka's residency at Rijksmuseum Meermanno. There are two days featuring different inspiring guest speakers: Benjamin McMillan on 16 September and Hanna Boslau on 1 October.

About Hanna Boslau
Hanna Boslau, a type and graphic designer, explores what typefaces can be beyond conventional letterforms. What do we need for communication in today’s world and in the future?
Her design approach is based on the principle of learning through collecting: future theories, symbols, emoji, runes and hieroglyphs, medieval pictograms, metal type ornaments, phonetic transcription, and alternative alphabets. The typeface becomes the main character in a fictional future, telling a story through ornaments and symbol extensions.
Hanna holds a master’s degree in type design from the Type and Media programme at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), and lives and works in The Hague. During the workshop, participants will draw inspiration from the museum’s collection to develop their own ornamental typeface, or extend an existing one. As part of the workshop, Hanna will speak about her design approach and showcase a selection of her work.
